Over the last two decades, there has been productive interplay between the fields of complex analysis and probability, with further connections to discrete mathematics, conformal geometry, and theoretical physics. Examples of this include Schramm-Loewner Evolution and random triangulations. The conference will feature leading researchers, Grégory Miermont and Steffen Rohde, who will each give a three-talk survey lecture series. Additionally, the conference format includes invited plenary talks by senior researchers, shorter communications by early-career participants, and poster and computer demonstration sessions. This project is NSF funding to support travel and other participant costs for approximately 30 participants, especially early-career researchers and graduate students.\n\nThe 2014 Barrett Lectures will be the 44th installment of a highly regarded lecture series that began as a tribute to the distinguished scientist John H. Barrett, head of our Mathematics Department at the time of his death in 1969. The past conferences have attracted a distinguished series of speakers and participants. In 1912 Hermann Weyl published his paper establishing the Weyl law which gives the leading asymptotic description for the counting function of eigenvalues of the Dirichlet or Neumann Laplacian on a bounded domain in the Euclidean space. He later conjectured the form of the second term in asymptotics of the counting functions. After contributions by \nmany mathematicians, among them, Courant, Hilbert, Agranovitch, Levitan, Hormander, Seeley, Duistermaat, Guillemin, Melrose and Sjostrand, the Weyl conjecture was solved by Ivrii in 1982. The workshop is intended as a forward-looking celebration of the 100th anniversary of Weyl's paper. Among the directions to be explored are the (conjectured) connection between random matrix theory and \nhigh energy distribution of differences between eigenvalues, probabilistic Weyl laws for non-self-adjoint \noperators, distribution of scattering resonances and fractal Weyl laws, and physical experiments related to quantum chaos and inverse problems. \n\nAll of the conference topics are central to analysis and are extremely active areas of research. The neural crest and cranial placodes are temporary structures in growing embryos that together build all the nerve cells outside the brain and spinal cord, such as the nerves that control the gut, the sense organs enabling our senses of smell, hearing and balance, and also the eye lenses, much of the skull, some cells of the teeth, and all skin pigment cells. The conference sessions will discuss the evolutionary origins of these essential structures, and how they work during development to form these different types of cells and organs. The NC&CP GRC is held in a setting that allows scientists at all levels to discuss problems and advances in studying these embryo structures. The program will also allow opportunities to mentor young scientists of all backgrounds, including an informal forum to discuss the professional growth and challenges women face in science, and a Graduate Research Seminar organized and run by junior scientists. This seminar enables junior researchers to present their data in an informal, peer-group setting, so they gain confidence and camaraderie, and includes a faculty-led Career Mentorship Panel discussion, \"The Different Faces of Academic Research.\" A diverse set of speakers has been assembled, with 19 further talks, selected from submitted abstracts, to be presented by women, under-represented minorities, and junior researchers.\n\nThe Neural Crest and Cranial Placodes Gordon Research Conference (NC&CP GRC) uniquely considers two distinct embryonic cell types, the neural crest and the cranial placodes, that have traditionally been studied separately. These embryonic structures together contribute to a wide variety of cell types during development, including the entire peripheral nervous system, sense organs, pigment cells, the craniofacial skeleton, and teeth. Neural crest and cranial placodes are derived from adjacent domains within the early ectoderm and their initial patterning is influenced by coordinated signals. They provide integrated, experimentally tractable systems for investigating a broad array of fundamental questions in cell, developmental, evolutionary, and systems biology. Study of neural crest cells has pioneered the understanding of fundamental properties of epithelial-mesenchymal transitions as well as cell migration, and has been instrumental in defining general stem cell properties across numerous tissue populations. The use of systems biology methods to construct the gene regulatory networks that control vertebrate development has been pioneered in the study of neural crest and cranial placodes. The emergence and diversification of the neural crest and cranial placodes is thought to have been critical for vertebrate evolution. This conference will bring together a diverse group of scientists in a collegial atmosphere to foster substantive discussions and promote collaboration. These funds will be used to support the travel costs associated with the attendance of approximately 19 U.S. Earth scientists, enabling them to present their scientific findings and benefit from the scholarly exchange of ideas. The highest priority will be given to graduate students and early career investigators who do not have other resources to offset their travel costs. The project being performed by Arianne Hunter, entitled Development of an Asymmetric Electrochemical-NHK Reaction using Multivariate Linear Regression Analyses, is to be conducted under the guidance of mentoring scientist Sarah E. Reisman. This project is supported by the Office of Multidisciplinary Activities in the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate. <br/><br/>This project utilizes multivariate linear regression (MLR) models to guide the identification of a privileged ligand class that will transform the electrochemically driven Nozaki-Hiyama-Kishi reaction (e-NHK) into a highly enantioselective method. The specific aims include screening ligands to identify privileged scaffolds that produce high levels of asymmetry, developing tethered ligands to increase the efficiency and asymmetry of the reaction, and conducting electroanalytical investigations into the formation of heteronuclear complexes. These in-depth studies into the e-NHK using data science-driven MLR models and electroanalytical/spectroelectrochemical mechanistic investigations will contribute a new fundamental understanding of the Cr and Ni speciation in the e-NHK. Dr. Hunter will also work to broaden participation through efforts like starting a NOBCChE chapter, participating in the Diversity in Chemistry Initiative at Caltech, and working with the Caltech Center for Teaching, Learning, and Outreach. Under the supervision of Dr. Ted Goebel, Mr. John Blong will conduct his doctoral research in the central Alaska Range, undertaking a study of human use of upland landscapes from earliest colonization to less than 1,000 years ago. The primary focus of this project is to explain the timing, environmental context, and nature of human colonization of the uplands, and to explore how the environment and use of upland landscapes changed throughout prehistory. This project will be the first comprehensive study of human upland adaptations in central Alaska. There are several models describing human use of the uplands, but there has been no focused exploration of upland settlement and land-use strategies. The study area for conducting this research is the upper Susitna River basin, where a pilot study resulted in the location of 19 new archaeological sites, two of which have been radiocarbon dated, with cultural components spanning the early through late Holocene. \n\nFive specific objectives drive this research: (1) to establish the paleoenvironmental history, and (2) record of human occupation of upland landscapes of the upper Susitna River basin, (3) to reconstruct lithic technological activities carried out over time in the uplands of the central Alaska Range basin, from initial colonization to less than 1,000 years ago, (4) to interpret technological-organization strategies carried out in the uplands of the central Alaska Range, especially as they relate to subsistence/settlement organization, and (5) to put the upper Susitna basin study area in the greater context of the prehistoric record of central Alaska.
